What if a company were so treasured and trusted that people literally took to the streets—by the thousands—to save it? That company is Market Basket, a popular New England supermarket chain. With its arresting firsthand accounts from the streets and executive suites, We Are Market Basket is as inspiring as it is instructive. What is it about Market Basket and its leader that provokes such ferocious loyalty? How does a company spread across three states maintain a culture that embraces everyone—from cashier to customer—as family? Can a company really become an industry leader by prioritizing stakeholders over shareholders? After long-time CEO Arthur T. Demoulas was ousted by his cousin Arthur S. Demoulas, the company's managers and rank-and-file workers struck back. Risking their own livelihoods to restore the job of their beloved boss they walked out, but they didn't walk far. The national media and experts were stunned by the unprecedented defense of an executive. All openly challenged the Market Basket board of directors to make things right. In the end: They were joined by loyal customers at protest rallies—leaving stores empty. Suppliers and vendors stopped deliveries—rendering shelves bare. Politicians were forced to take sides. Set against a backdrop of bad blood and corporate greed, We Are Market Basket is a page-turner that chronicles the epic rise, fall, and redemption of this iconic and uniquely American company. At the request of the U.S. Department of Education, the National Research Council (NRC) established the Committee on NAEP Reporting Practices to examine the feasibility and potential impact of district-level and market-basket reporting practices. As part of its charge, the committee sponsored a workshop in February 2000 to gather information on issues related to market-basket reporting for the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP). Designing a Market Basket for NAEP: Summary of a Workshop explores with various stakeholders their interest in and perceptions regarding the desirability, feasibility, and potential impact of market-basket reporting for the NAEP. The market-basket concept is based on the idea that a relatively limited set of items can represent some larger construct. The general idea of a NAEP market basket is based on an image of a collection of test questions representative of some larger content domain and an easily understood index to summarize performance on the items.

This new textbook on the Chinese economy clearly presents all that the world's second largest economy has accomplished, as well as what work remains to be done. As economic development in China for the last 30 years has been mostly "top down," this text focuses on the macroeconomic and monetary sides of the economy. Utilising case studies throughout, the book uses not only the traditional macroeconomics tools in explaining the Chinese economy, but also takes a novel approach by assessing China as a company. Through employment of models from finance, such as cash flows and valuations, the text is able to dig deeper into understanding the fundamental characteristics of the Chinese economy. The book also presents extremely useful analysis of the comparisons and contrasts between Chinese economic activity and that of the U.S. economy. eResources including chapter questions with solutions and lecture slides will be available on this webpage.
