Unpublished writings of Colin Rowe—letters, essays, lectures, and a postcard—clarify his thinking on key concepts while revealing his wit and erudition. Colin Rowe (1920–1999) was one of the great architectural historians of the twentieth century, publishing the influential works The Mathematics of the Ideal Villa and Other Essays (1976) and Collage City (1978). While his written work was rigorous and authoritative, his lectures and letters were more casual, “carefully careless,” both witty and erudite. I Almost Forgot gathers twenty-three such writings—letters, essays, lectures, a postcard, and a eulogy. Both edifying and entertaining, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, occasionally scathing, they fill in personal details and clarify key concepts in Rowe’s work. In these writings, Rowe tells of the “Corbu superstructure upon a beaux-arts base” that refugee Polish architects and their students introduced to his alma mater, the University of Liverpool, in the early 1940s. He characterizes his controversial essay “The Mathematics of the Ideal Villa” as a “pretty clever but, otherwise, perfectly innocent little article,” and reports that Le Corbusier’s Villa Schwob “played an entirely disproportionate role in my mental life.” Rowe’s voice and opinions are strong in his discussions of architecture, current events, and his own life and work. Each piece begins with a brief introduction by the volume editor. The writings are illustrated by images of Rowe’s drawings, letters, and postcards; photographs and drawings of Rowe’s only built work; and illustrations chosen by Rowe for lectures.

Two hundred and sixty-four years after the first awakening, the family line stops momentarily, perhaps forever, in the body of a child. Victor is a second-grader growing up with a very unique family history: he is a direct descendant of the monster created by his namesake, Victor Frankenstein. Understandably proud of this distinction, his effort to share this remarkable fact with his classmates and teachers backfires, and he becomes a target on the playground. He is not without allies. With the help of his grandmother, Elizabeth, and his best friend, Michelle, he learns the origin of his familys strange history straight from Mary Shelleys Frankenstein. He learns how that story continued with the surprising journey of the monster and his monster-bride to America. And finally, he learns about the end of making monsters on earth. But there are elements in this history about which even those closest to it are unaware. Wonders abound and dangers lurk for Victor and his loved ones in unexpected places. Monster Talk is a poignant tale about the power of reading, the complexity of love, the wonder and terror of growing up, and the moral ambiguity of the species, human and monster both.

English is not the native language of the author, Miguel Estrada. Reason why he felt the need to write in simple, easy reading, English language, this mix of fiction / non-fiction, romantic, adventurous, book/novel. He bases the fiction part of his book in one of his many love songs hes written. Besides adding a little humor, he also explores how abandonment can sometimes haunt even the most successful among us. In the non-fiction part, he likes to share with the world all the struggles and adversities he endured growing up as a multi racial child in a small village of the Atlantic Coast of his native Panama, in Central America. And all the difficulties he went through as he hitchhiked his way from his country to The U.S, not knowing for sure where he was going, let alone the English language. He also speaks of the government corruption that goes on in his country and many other third world countries. Which compelled him to leave home in search of a better life for him and his family. He also emphasizes a great deal of gratitude, throughout his book. But most of all, he emphasizes gratitude through the whole book.
